Legislator Jason Hsu Congressional Office
(TAIPEI,TAIWAN) The Asian Blockchain Summit (ABS), which Legislator Jason Hsu launched last year (2018) came back this year at a larger scale. Many of the professionals and the press described last year’s ABS as the most significant blockchain event in Asia. This year’s ABS was brought to the next level, guests from all over the world were surprised and excited seeing the tremendous energy and power that Taiwan has in pursuing change and a better future.
The current world changes at a speed that none of us have experienced in the past. For example, in the past year, we have witnessed the trade war between the United States and China, Brexit in the UK, the ban of the Boeing 737MAX, the tragedy caused by the massive protests in Hong Kong and Sudan, etc. It is no doubt that these events and conflicts are unfortunate and discouraging. However, human society has shown the ability to slowly finding solutions that are acceptable to each other. This means that as global citizens, we should not be afraid of change and development, rather we should use our creativity to generate good adaptation methods and models.
The Japanese House of Representatives, Mr. Naokazu Takemoto also joined us at ABS, and we were able to discuss the STO regulations that have just been released in Taiwan, and the cooperation between Taiwan and Japan. Mr. Takemoto, on behalf of Japan, and me representing Taiwan, we also signed a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. This is an example that demonstrates the importance of regional cooperation, since areas like STO regulations, AML (Anti-money Laundering), cross-border supervision of cryptocurrencies, and bilateral industry exchanges would not be limited by national borders.
The world of cryptocurrencies has always been developed along with blockchains and e-money. It not only helps people around the world to connect more closely but also enhances the privacy and security of users. In addition, it can provide financial services to the population that lacks the availability of traditional banks. Poor people and the rural area’s development and connection would not be lacked behind giving them an opportunity to improve their living standards.
For most of the general public, blockchain and cryptocurrencies are not a familiar topic, and there is often a barrier for them approach such areas, that is why changing our education is a vital step at the moment. The future generations would face different issues than the current ones, and it is almost impossible to speculate future issues. Therefore, it would be most useful for us to educate the public and future generations, and equipping them with the tools to deal with problems in the future. In fact, there were many technologies and international press/media that were excited to communicate with blockchain entrepreneurs in Taiwan and Asia. But what was more significant was the number of live broadcast platforms that have been added this year. This will not only enable industry, experts, scholars and the general public who cannot come to the conference to receive instant news of the event but expand relevant news to a greater population in no delay.
Legislator Hsu concluded his speech with American philosopher Buckminster Fuller’s quote, “If you rely on the existing reality, you can never change the status quo. To change the status quo, to build a new model to make the existing model obsolete,” and this is the time when for the human population to let go of the old model and open our hearts to create the models of our time for a decentralized future.
